Is it a fruit or is it a vegetable. Well, although they are eaten as a vegetable – they are in fact fruit. There are many varieties and in recent years there has been a clear revival of the so-called “old” tomatoes. Red, orange, yellow, black, green, beef heart, cherry, grape; you have a lot of choices and flavours for your garden.

PLANT

Although they prefer warm climates, tomatoes can be grown anywhere, favouring sunny locations.

Sowing will take place in March but before planting, it is important to clean the soil, adding compost and manure to ensure a good soil quality.

Depending on the region, you can plant the crops between the end of April and the beginning of May. The deeper you plant them, the more they will be protected from the weather.

It is essential to add stakes to your plants. Stakes provide support for the plant growth, whilst helping to keep them from ground level where they are more accessible to pests and disease.

CARE

Tomatoes are among the easiest fruits and vegetables to grow.

Water regularly; however, be careful to water only the base, because if you wet the tomatoes or the leaves, you risk developing certain diseases, such as mildew.

As the plants grow, remove the dead leaves so that the fruits ripen with more sunlight visibility. This will also prevent the development of diseases.

HARVEST

Even if you can find them all year long in the stores, you will have to wait until the end of May or beginning of June to harvest your little ones. And sometimes even a little later if the sun was scarce during the cultivation.

Cherry tomatoes can be harvested as late as November.

Phostrogen tips for growing tomatoes

<smartfire-component name='product-insert-one' attributes="{"productId":3091,"variantProps":{},"brandId":-1,"product":{"id":3091,"link":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/product\/phostrogen-organic-liquid-tomato-food-1l\/","description":"
Phostrogen\u00ae Organic Liquid Tomato Food is the perfect choice for anyone looking to grow bigger, juicier, and more flavourful tomatoes. Thus, we will not use the same variety to make the different types of potato that reach our tables, so the choice of which to grow is usually according to your tastes.

PLANT

For quality crop, a soil that has been tilled to a certain depth is required. Add fertilizer before planting, then scratch your soil.

The crops should be planted after the frost, therefore from March to May depending on the region.

Plant them 10cm deep, taking care to space them out in a grid pattern.

CARE

About 6 weeks after planting, hoe the soil and bring it back to the foot of the plants. This is called “buttering your plants”. The root ball should ideally reach 15-20cm.

Water sparingly in dry weather if necessary and add mulch to prevent the soil from drying out too quickly.

HARVEST

New potatoes are harvested when they bloom, about 2 months after planting depending on the variety. It is possible to eat them directly after harvesting.

For other potatoes, harvesting should start at the end of summer in dry weather, when the leaves are wilting.

Then let the potatoes dry and store them in a cool, dry place.

The post Potatoes: planting & care guide appeared first on Seezon UK.

Citrus Fruits: planting & care guide

Seezon

Houseplants

Fruits & vegetables

Garden advice

Advice

Healthy

Fertiliser

Watering

Native to Southeast Asia, Citrus trees thrive in the sun and in warmer temperatures. Not only do they brighten up your home & garden, but citrus fruits are also very good for your health. They are rich in antioxidants, provide magnesium and calcium to fight against aging and help strengthen your bones.

PLANT

For planting in pots, ensure it is a reasonable size, otherwise you will have more leaves than fruits if your pot is too big. Use clay ball for good drainage & a specialist soil for a quality substrate.

Planted in the autumn, the citrus will strengthen and take root in the soil, whereas when planted in spring the vegetation will be immediate.

CARE

During summer, water your tree frequently: every two or three days. Reduce the rate in winter and feed your tree regularly with citrus fertilizer.

Prune citrus trees every two years, very lightly and re-pot your tree about every 4 years.

When it’s freezing, move your pot into an area with little heat, but in the sun. If the room is heated and the air is too dry, your citrus tree will suffer.

In the spring, bring your citrus fruit out without exposing it to direct sunlight. Prepare it gradually for summer.

Be careful, citrus fruits are very sensitive to diseases! Common signs of disease are cracks in the leaves, that turn yellow and fall off. These diseases are often due to a too dry air when the trees are indoors.

HARVEST

Pick your fruit as they ripen and as you need them. Otherwise, you will weaken your citrus fruit.

Most lemons are harvested in winter and spring, some year-round. Clementines are harvested in November and December; oranges are harvested all winter; bergamots and tangerines in January and February.

If you don’t need them right away, leave the lemon on its branch as it will last longer. It will last up to two weeks in a dry, airy place; sometimes even up to a month in the refrigerator.

How to care for your citrus plants with Baby Bio

The post Citrus Fruits: planting & care guide appeared first on Seezon UK.

Carrots: planting & care guide

Seezon

Fruits & vegetables

Carrot

Garden advice

Advice

Care

Vegetables

Feed

Did you know that carrots were not always orange as they are today? In fact, they used to be white, and often confused with turnips. Today, they are also available in yellow, red, and purple. The purple carrot has many benefits and is very sweet. How about planting one of these varieties?

PLANT

For good tasting carrots, plant them in the sun and prepare your soil beforehand. Well-drained soil, without stones, light soil, and soil that has been nourished before planting to guarantees quality. Carrots also like slightly sandy soil.

Carrots can be planted in the middle of winter under a tarpaulin or tunnel, but ideally, they should be planted from March to at least July in the ground.

When you plant the seeds in a row, do not hesitate to mix them with sand.

CARE

After the first leaves emerge, you can start thinning and spacing the plants so that growth is not impeded. Adjust the distances according to the type of carrots.

Water regularly to avoid a too dry soil, and hoe and mulch to protect against weeds.

The most dangerous pest for carrots is the carrot fly. Yellowish coloured larvae attack the carrot from the roots. That’s why mulch is necessary on a vegetable garden.

HARVEST

Harvest takes place from July for the first plants and spreads out until November. Some harvests can also be done at the very beginning of the season, in April and May, for early carrots.

Remember to rotate the vegetables during the following season, do not replant carrots in the same place to improve the quality of your soil.

Tips on how to feed the crops you grow

<smartfire-component name='product-insert-list' attributes="{"productsProps":[{"id":1643,"name":"Maxicrop Organic Garden Natural Fertiliser 1 lt"},{"id":2943,"name":"Phostrogen All Purpose Plant Food 80 Can"},{"id":3357,"name":"Phostrogen Organic All Purpose Liquid Plant Food 1L"}],"brandId":-1,"products":[{"id":1643,"link":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/product\/maxicrop-vegetable-growth-stimulant-and-feed\/","description":"
Boost your garden\u2019s productivity naturally with Maxicrop\u00ae Vegetable Growth Stimulant & Feed \u2013 the ideal choice for vibrant, organic homegrown fruits and vegetables. Easy to grow, they take up little space in the garden, and are therefore perfectly suited to more limited outside spaces. Not only are berries delicious, but they are also antioxidants and provide us with potassium, essential to our well-being by acting on fatigue, muscles, hypertension.

PLANT

Most berries are planted in early autumn. Your plants will be able to root well and provide you with good berries for the following year.

Strawberry plants bought in cups can be planted in early spring to harvest in the season. They do not tolerate too humid and calcareous soils, therefore prefer a clay soil.

Blackberry bushes prefer a soil that is not too humid, whilst raspberry bushes adapt to all types of soil and love the sun.

In any case, choose a sunny and previously cleaned soil, and for quality harvests, add manure to your soil.

CARE

The best time to add fertiliser is in the autumn, after planting, and more specifically a specialist fertiliser design for berries.

Red berry bushes are very sensitive to pest attacks, so make sure you take preventative measures. You can also add a small protective net to protect your fruits from birds or other predators.

To ensure longevity for your plants, prune your shrubs by removing old, dried out and damaged branches that no longer produce fruit. It is also important to weed the soil regularly and preferably mulch it.

In summer, water regularly, avoiding watering the leaves. Do not wet the foliage at the risk of attracting pests.

HARVEST

Berries are harvested as the season progresses and according to your needs. They are difficult to preserve. Depending on the species, you can harvest from June to October, before the first frost.

Harvest slowly and carefully; they are fragile, too abrupt gestures could damage them. The plants live in general 3 years, or more if they are very well maintained.

The post Berries: planting & care guide appeared first on Seezon UK.

Apples: planting & care guide

Seezon

Fruits & vegetables

Garden advice

Apple tree

Garden

Fertiliser

Advice

Care

Apples

Apples are one of the most common fruits, with thousands of varieties around the world, including gala, golden, lady, granny smith to name a few. Growing an apple tree in your garden is a fun, easy and cost-effective way to enjoy this delicious fruit!

PLANTING

Before planting your apple tree, think about how it will adapt to the space available: it will grow better and more easily in larger spaces.

You can plant a tree bought in a garden centre or apple seeds, which will take at least 5 years to produce. It is also essential that the tree can be pollinated, otherwise you will never have an apple. This pollination will be easy if you have a lot of vegetation around.

Plant your tree in mid-autumn or early winter, so that it has time to grow roots for the next season. The soil should be drained, aerated, in the sun and protected from the wind.

To ensure good fruit production, plant several species of apple trees and space the trees at least 10m apart to ensure good growth.

CARE

Water your apple tree frequently. It does not tolerate hot climates, so the soil must remain hydrated.

Your apple tree will give you fruit for several years. Prune it at the end of winter, before the first buds appear. Cut off old and damaged branches.

In the autumn, add fertilizer to the base of the tree.

In summer, water regularly without flooding and apply mulch at the base of the tree to prevent weeds from growing. This will also protect the fruit in case of fall. You can use protective treatments to protect from infestation but remember to stop the treatments when the fruits are ripe.

HARVEST

It will probably be a few years before you can harvest the first fruit from your tree. Once the fruit is ripe, you can harvest it before the first frost, in early autumn, for winter varieties.

An apple is ready to be picked when it detaches very easily from its supporting branch.

Apples can be well preserved. However, eat the ripest fruit first, which will not last as long. Store the others in a cool place, away from light and frost.

The post Apples: planting & care guide appeared first on Seezon UK.

Why use natural gardening methods

Seezon

Fruits & vegetables

Flowers & trees

Garden advice

Lawn

Natural gardening

Natural

Garden

Natural gardening makes it possible to produce crops that taste good and are good for your health. By preserving or promoting biodiversity, the garden will regain a beautiful balance that will be conducive to abundant harvests, healthy, tasty and rich in nutrients, but also to obtaining a garden so full of flowers that it will be admired by all!

Restore balance in your garden

In nature, plants grow without human intervention. The soil, rich in life and always supplied with organic matter, is able to receive plants that settle there spontaneously. This last notion is important because plants settle where the conditions are most suitable for them to grow. Some will be satisfied with a poor and dry soil while others will need a fresh and humid soil. They can grow, flower and even produce fruit naturally.

The gardener often makes considerable efforts for a lesser return. In trying to do too much, he sometimes makes mistakes that cause fundamental imbalances resulting in a loss of biodiversity, a disrupted balance between prey and predators and the disappearance of pollinating insects. Bad gardening practices such as turning over the soil, destroying ecosystems or tracking down the smallest insect with phytosanitary products often have catastrophic results on cultivated plants, which have a much harder time growing than those left to their own devices in nature.

Make the best out of what already exists in your garden

Taking into account what exists in a garden is a fundamental notion for natural gardening. In each garden, there are positive and negative points that one must take advantage of or live with. Some parameters deserve to be particularly observed.

-The climate, the nature of the soil, the exposure are of course all important in the choice of plants that can be grown or not in this specific garden. For example, planting tropical plants or citrus fruits in an area where frost is common is a waste of time, energy and money. It is better to choose plants that are adapted to the soil because they do not need to be acclimated. Observe the plants that grow spontaneously, you will be able to deduce the nature of your soil and therefore choose plants that will grow better in your garden!

-Assessing the biodiversity is also very important. A large presence of birds, mammals or reptiles is a sign of a good balance. These predators will be able to deal with many pests naturally. Similarly, if pollinating insects are present in large numbers, they will ensure a good production of fruits and vegetables. On the other hand, if diseases and pests are present in large numbers, this is evidence of an imbalance that will need to be corrected by promoting biodiversity, among other things. Evidence of an imbalance can also result from abiotic stress (change of environment) or from invasive pests.

Make gardening easier

Observing, favoring biodiversity, taking the soil into great consideration and creating zones that welcome natural flora and fauna will ensure the return of a good balance in the garden. From this will come an ease of cultivation and maintenance for the gardener, who will have less to worry about maintenance and treatments. Everything becomes easy, with the result of abundant and succulent harvests and a garden in full bloom!

Tips on what suits different parts of the garden

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":26,"tabletHeight":16,"mobileHeight":16,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component> <smartfire-component name='post-insert' attributes="{"postId":1365,"categoryId":0,"post":{"id":1365,"title":"Why and how to garden in favour of biodiversity\u00a0","categories":[{"term_id":51,"name":"Garden advice","slug":"garden-advice","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":51,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":0,"count":27,"filter":"raw","term_order":"2"},{"term_id":25,"name":"Natural gardening","slug":"natural-gardening","term_group":0,"term_taxonomy_id":25,"taxonomy":"category","description":"","parent":51,"count":6,"filter":"raw","term_order":"4"}],"author":"Seezon","link":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/why-and-how-to-garden-in-favour-of-biodiversity\/","thumbnail":{"title":"Why and how to garden in favour of biodiversity","url":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2022\/12\/Medium-Seezon-Why-and-how-to-garden-in-favor-of-biodiversity-1-people-looking-plant-kid.jpeg","alt":"People looking at plants"},"date":"2022-12-23","readingTime":4,"excerpt":"A beautiful, flourishing, and abundant garden in summer is within the reach of all gardeners who know how to take into account the different elements that make up the garden and that ensure its balance. Its nutrient storage capacity is improved with amendments and fertilisers (also called plant food). Plants have access to all the nutrients they need and develop perfectly.

Plants draw nutrients from the soil in varying quantities depending on the species. Some plants, such as melons or tomatoes, are very greedy and exhaust the soil, while others have very specific nutrient needs. It is therefore interesting to apply natural fertilisers at the right time and by targeting the type of crop to give back to the earth what we took from it by harvesting fruits, vegetables and other flowers.

Over time, overexploited soil loses its ability to store nutrients. It becomes poor and plants do not thrive. They need more and more inputs (fertilisers, among others). Preservation of the soil’s ecosystem using soil assistance is essential.

Essential nutrients for a healthy plant

Three elements are essential for the good health of plants

Nitrogen (N) which allows growth and is an essential element for leafy vegetables and plants grown for their foliage;

Phosphorus (P), which ensures root formation and better resistance to diseases;

Potassium (K), which is involved in the photosynthesis process, allows for more abundant flowering, production, and better resistance to cold.

Other elements, sometimes a little forgotten, are also very important because their deficiency can cause pathologies.

Calcium, which is involved in the cell formation process.

Copper, iron and magnesium which help in the formation of chlorophyll. An iron deficiency can cause a well-known disease: chlorosis, which causes leaf discoloration.

Boron which helps the growth of stems and the formation of seeds;

Zinc which allows the growth of plants and the synthesis of chlorophyll

These nutrients will get from the soil to the plant thanks to the roots. Therefore, you can add natural phosphate or other root stimulating products to optimise the journey of nutrients from soil to plant. Fertiliser/plant food that is applied as a liquid is faster acting, ,but a a granule will slowly release and work for longer.

Overall, fertilising your soil allows your plants to be healthier, more resistant, grow better, and produce more!

<div Along with other squash and pumpkin, it is part of the Cucurbita Pepo species. In the USA, it is more commonly known as the Zucchini. Technically, it is a fruit that is harvested when immature, as it can grow over half a metre in length when fully matured.

An herbaceous annual, it was brought to Europe from the New World by the early European colonists, where it was adopted and cultivated widely by the Italians in 19th century.
<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":26,"tabletHeight":16,"mobileHeight":16,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>
How to Plant courgette
<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":10,"tabletHeight":10,"mobileHeight":10,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>
Courgettes thrive in a warm, temperate climate with good air circulation and are suited to growing outdoors in more southerly climates. The optimum temperature for growth is 20-28°C.
Sow seeds indoors or in a greenhouse during March. Use pots with a 10cm diameter and place two seeds per planting. In warmer climates, the courgette seeds can be sown directly, placing them in holes that are 5-7cm deep. Make a row of holes, spacing each pair of seeds at least 1m apart and making a similar 1m spacing between each row.
As the shoots begin to grow, thin out the weaker seedlings, leaving only two plants per metre. As the plants develop, thin out the side shoots as well so that all the nutrients are focused.

Before planting courgette, the soil should be prepared to ensure that it is rich in humus, a loose texture and well-drained. Pre-sowing, distribute 30g/m² Multi Bayfolan Gardens and Gardens; follow-up with further dosing of 20g/m², first, at beginning of fruiting and the second, at harvesting. Alternatively, when foliage appears, use 15-20g / m² of Universal Pro Bayfolan, immediate-release fertiliser.

Soil should be kept moist but does not require regular watering.

Courgette plants can grow beyond a metre high, therefore, need to be staked and tied, supporting the plant’s growth and providing good air circulation.
<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":26,"tabletHeight":16,"mobileHeight":16,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>
When to harvest courgette
<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":10,"tabletHeight":10,"mobileHeight":10,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>
Courgettes plants are slender with a creeping stem. They produce blooms of vibrant yellow flowers which can be a different sex on the same plant. The flowers are also harvested and are a delicacy in cooking.
The size of the courgette is dependent on the time of harvest. If left to mature, they can reach a metre or more, however, they are harvested at 12-15cm to produce the tastiest fruit. Harvest in summer, over a period of 2-3 months when they should reach the desired size.
Courgettes can then be stored in the fridge for a couple of weeks

Did you know?

Courgettes are low-salt with vitamins and enzymes which make it very easy to digest and also refreshing. They are ideal for eating on a weight-loss diet and can be cooked in a variety of ways grilled, fried, baked or stuffed. Courgettes are often used as an ingredient in soups and feature in many Mediterranean dishes.

Diseases and pests affecting courgette growth

Aphids, White fly, Black cutworm terricolous, Click-beetles and mites, Powdery mildew, Downy mildew, Gray mould, Pythium, Bacterial diseases

The post Courgette & Marrow appeared first on Seezon UK.
