However, anyone who now only thinks of allotment plots, balconies and towel-sized front gardens is thinking too narrowly. Urban gardening has the whole city in its sights. Every nook and cranny is being conquered by plant lovers and transformed into small and large oasis. Urban gardeners are making previously unused areas green, whether it’s a slab of land in front of your front door or an industrial wasteland, from your backyard to your rooftop.

Especially in the city, many surfaces are sealed, i.e., paved, tarred, or concreted. For the transformation into a green paradise, however, this substrate is not a problem. Urban gardening also works in planters. Whether old barrels or bathtubs, boxes and sacks or self-made raised beds made of wood: Anything that can hold plant substrate and allow water to drain off is permitted. One advantage of these mobile beds is that they can be quickly dismantled if the area is to be used for other purposes.

A special aspect of urban gardening is the community. Of course, you can also landscape your own patch of the city. But if you feel like it, you can join a community garden. Here, like-minded people meet to weed and rake, water, and dig, seed and plant. The harvest is shared among all the gardeners – and sometimes eaten together. What began in New York and Los Angeles in the 1970s has long since united enthusiastic amateur gardeners here in the UK, and around the world.

Where can you get involved in urban gardening?

Community gardens often look for interested parties on bulletin boards, the Internet and via social media. Alternatively, the allotment garden is an attractive option.

A paved garden can become a green oasis, with mobile beds that can be dismantled again if necessary. Zinc tubs, jute sacks and boxes made of wood or plastic can be planted without any problems. Important: Don’t forget drainage holes for the water!

Planting bags that become vertical beds when hung on the wall can help transform balconies & smaller outdoor spaces. There is also room for flowerpots and herb boxes on open shelves. So, the balcony garden grows into another dimension.

What about a flat roof? There is also room to grow here – but it is worth checking first with the landlord and/or a structural engineer to see what’s possible!

The post Urban gardening for beginners appeared first on Seezon UK.

The 4 most popular garden styles

Seezon

Inspiration

Garden projects

Advice

Lawn

Vegetables

Garden

Watering

Solution

Here Seezon® looks at 4 popular garden styles to inspire those with an outdoor space: The Cottage Garden Nostalgic and romantic, lush and a little playful, yet also formal and elegant: the “Cottage Garden” exudes British country house flair. An absolute must for this garden style are roses. Whether as shrub roses in the flower beds or as climbers on fruit trees, they exude their fragrance throughout the summer and enchant with their flowers. Around them wind the overflowing beds, filled with magnificent and complimentary perennials that bloom in pastel shades, such as cranesbill and columbine, peony, and bellflower. Boxwood hedges or picket fences keep the beds in check, whilst in all this greenery, one or two there are hidden spaces to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

The Natural Garden

By creating a nature/natural garden, you do something good for people and animals, and in an ecologically valuable garden, everything revolves around diversity. A colourful mix of mostly native plants will attract insects and blooms well into the autumn. A dry-stone wall will provide habitat not only for sedum and wall creepers, but also for toads and other species. Wild shrubs, such as cornelian cherry or elderberry, serve as privacy screens from neighbours, predator dens for children, and food sources and nesting sites for quite a few bird species. If there is no space for a pond, at least a bird bath should provide the necessary water. In a natural garden, there is potential for fruit and vegetables in tubs or raised beds too.

The Mediterranean Garden

With the scents of lavender and rosemary and the sun on your face, you almost think you can hear chirping cicadas and the sound of the Mediterranean Sea. No question, with the right plants, a Mediterranean garden can be created even in the UK. Herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and sage, just like the true lavender, are hardy and can be planted without any problems. However, citrus trees should be planted in tubs on the sunny terrace so that they can be moved to sheltered quarters over the winter. Uncomplicated, on the other hand, are some “doubles”. the willow-leaved pear, for example, looks like the olive, and the juniper or mock cypress can replace the more delicate Mediterranean cypress. And while a water feature quietly splashes, you can enjoy the vacation flair on the terrace made of gravel, natural stone, or terracotta.

The Modern Garden

When designing modern, minimalist gardens, the rule is: less is more. Instead of colourful variety, the focus here is on clear lines and shapes. Beds, paths, seating areas: they are all laid out geometrically and speak an architectural language of form. Plants move into the foreground as expressive soloists or remain in the background as monochrome bedding. Light, airy grasses break up the hard edges of concrete, marble, or natural stone, while bright colours set accents.

The post The 4 most popular garden styles appeared first on Seezon UK.

How to have a beautiful garden all summer long

Seezon

Inspiration

Garden projects

Watering

Solution

Advice

Vegetables

Garden

An opulent garden, covered with flowers and giving abundant harvests is a dream accessible by all gardeners. Here are Seezon®’s top tips to a beautiful garden all summer long:

Jobs for the vegetable garden:

The month of June is a pivotal period in the garden with last plantings, seeding, transplanting, thinning, ridging, maintenance, and mulching; there is a lot of work for any gardener!

Carry out the last plantings

It is advisable to do the last plantings at the beginning of June. Any later than this, and it would take too long to grow quality produce. It is also better to take advantage of this period when growth is at its peak before the summer heat.

It is therefore the right time to transplant plants bought in pots or planted in the previous months into the ground, such as tomatoes, courgettes, melons, aubergines, and peppers.

Thinning out seedlings

Plants seeded in May in the open ground such as lettuce, leeks, carrots, or beans should be thinned out. Remove the weakest seedlings to respect an adequate spacing to offer an optimal development to those which remain in place.

Ridging some vegetables

Mounding concerns potatoes, beans, and peas.

Make a mound of earth at the feet of the plants concerned to bury the base of their stems. Peas and beans will root better while potatoes will form more tubercles which, shaded by this mound of soil, will not turn green.

Pruning to activate fruit production

Some vegetables need pruning to produce fruit more quickly.

Tomatoes: remove the suckers (stems that grow in the leaf axils) by pinching them between the thumb and forefinger on conventional tomato plants. This technique divides the gardening world because it would provide an entry point for many diseases, so some gardeners refrain from pruning.

Pinch courgettes and cucumbers when the plants have 4 true leaves.

Strawberries: multiply naturally by producing new seedlings at the end of a creeping stem. These seedlings called ‘stolons’ must be detached from the mother plant by simply cutting the stem that connects them to avoid the exhaustion of the plant and multiply it.

Mulch to protect the soil

Spread a thick layer of organic mulch (at least 5 cm) at the foot of the plants. Periods of drought and violent winds dry out the soil, heavy rain damages plants and washes away soil. High heat stresses the vegetation just as much as surprising late frosts. The past few years have clearly shown that climate change is already affecting nature in a wide variety of ways. It is time to adapt to the changes and make our gardens fit for the future. Challenge accepted!

What to do when it is hot?

Heat waves with temperatures above 30 °C are no longer an exception in summer. The increased air temperatures ensure that the soil also heats up. The warmer the soil, the faster the moisture evaporates. If you mulch the beds, with lawn clippings or other organic material, you allow the temperature of the soil to rise less and keep it moister. Dense planting of perennials, summer flowers and shrubs has a similar effect. Parasols and sails protect from the scorching sun, but trees also provide excellent shade in hot weather. They also ensure, that the interior of the house does not heat up so quickly. While stone surfaces store heat quickly during the day and release it slowly at night, ponds, flower beds and green flat roofs guarantee pleasant evaporative cooling.

What to do in times of drought?

In winter it can rain more than in the past, but in summer the precipitation tends to be absent, threatening periods of drought. That’s why it’s practical to collect water in rain barrels and catch basins so that you can draw from the full during dry periods. If the soil has a good composition, it can store water better. Sandy soils need clay minerals to do this, and loamy soils can be loosened with organic materials and sand. Drought is very hard on some plants, but for others it is not a problem. Replacing more demanding species with lower-maintenance ones will save a lot of frustration and watering.

What to do in heavy rain?

Heavy rain poses two dangers for the soil: One is the threat of erosion, and the other is flooding if the water cannot be absorbed. Dense planting helps in both cases. The many roots hold the soil in place and thus protect against erosion. They also loosen the soil, so the soil can better absorb and hold moisture. For the garden, this means that beds should be mulched or densely planted. If the surface is loosened regularly, it can better absorb large masses of water and pass them on to the soil.

What to do in strong winds?

Again, bare soil is exposed to the weather without protection. If the soil is bare, the strong winds will deprive it of water – another reason to mulch or place plants close together. To avoid storm damage, trees and shrubs should be checked regularly for rotten or even dead branches. Incidentally, lush hedges form an effective windbreak.

The post Climate Change: valuable tips to adapt your garden appeared first on Seezon UK.

A guide to essential garden tools

Seezon

Inspiration

Garden projects

Advice

Garden

Garden tools

Growing and creating your own garden haven is easy when you choose the right gardening tools. While some garden tools are used for a variety of tasks, others are more specialist, such as for pruning or harvesting fruit. The right equipment makes the task much less burdensome, and the best are built to last.

When choosing the right tool for you and your garden, the important thing is to consider your personal needs so that you make the best choice. Check the comfort of use and choose tools that are ergonomic and suitable for you. Check the handle and, in the case of larger tools, such as a spade, consider its weight. Finally, consider that, generally, the better the quality of the tool, the longer it will last.

Here is a list of the most important garden tools you may need:

• Shovel/Spade – With a good quality spade it is much easier to work the soil. Stainless steel tools are strong and durable; wooden handles, although more expensive, are more comfortable, especially when used for a long time.

• Rake – A good rake should be light, balanced and have 10-14 teeth; it is used to level the ground and prepare flower beds.

• Planter – It is very useful for transplanting salads and bulbs, for example. It is used to make a hole in the soil where you put the seedling; it is also useful for unpacking the soil after transplanting around the roots.

• Shears – This is a small tool that is convenient to use and very useful in the garden, ideal for pruning and cutting stems. Invest in a good pair of scissors that are lightweight and have an ergonomic handle, with blades that should always be held tightly affiliated, to make pruning less tiring.

• Pruning shears or loppers – Sharp blades equipped with long handles to cut through larger, hard-to-reach branches. They are used to adjust the shape of trees.

• Saw – A handsaw, to be used in the garden, is useful for cutting thicker branches. Choose one with a compact shape to reach intricate or hard-to-reach branches more easily.

• Shredder – Orchards should be cleared of all pruning debris and leaves. If infected branches are left on the ground, they become a source of inoculum for the succeeding year. The removal, therefore, of pruning residues with a shredder will be much easier.

• Sprinkler or sprayer – Plants are attacked affected by numerous pests. To defend them, it is necessary to have a pump that nebulizes solutions with pesticides. Pumps are usually pressure pumps containing a couple of litres of solution, or shoulder-mounted, with a corresponding lance, containing 5 to 20 litres.

• Fruit picker – Fruit picking gives much satisfaction, and a fruit picker is a very useful tool for picking hard-to-reach, tree-top fruit. This tool consists simply of a bag with steel teeth attached to a pole.

• Irrigation system – Irrigation is important for keeping fruit trees healthy. A sprinkler will allow you to water your garden even when you are on vacation.

The post A guide to essential garden tools appeared first on Seezon UK.
