Created in 1931, this remarkable garden with its bright colors was for a long time the workshop of the painter Jacques Majorelle. Threatened to be transformed by the city into a hotel project, Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé bought the garden in 1980 and set up his studio there. This oasis provided him with an infinite source of inspiration for his creations.

A stunning garden displaying Majorelle colours

This exotic garden blends vibrantly colored architecture with plants from all over the world. Jacques Majorelle, a painter and botanical enthusiast, created this magnificent garden as the base for his studio. Fountains, ceramic jars, murals, paths, and water fountains are elements of the garden that served as his inspiration. The painter brought to the unique architecture of this garden, bright colors that you will find on the jars, walls and pergolas. One color in particular stands out: a very intense and luminous ultramarine blue, which we now call: Majorelle Blue.

Thanks to the painter’s passion for botanical art, you will see in this garden over 300 types of plants, including: an important collection of cacti, bamboo, palms, jasmines, agaves, tree ferns, aquatic plants. These plants were brought back by Jacques Majorelle during his numerous trips around the world, creating a surprising and unique diversity.

A magical inspiration for Yves Saint Laurent

Located on Yves Saint Laurent street, this designer and fashion designer plays an important role in the history of this garden. During one of his trips to Morocco, Yves Saint Laurent discovered the amazing Majorelle garden and fell in love with it. After buying it in 1980, he left it open to tourists so that we could enjoy the beauty of the place that inspired him so much. He says: “For many years, I have found in the Majorelle garden an inexhaustible source of inspiration and I have often dreamed of its colors which are unique”. A few steps away from the garden, visit the Yves Saint Laurent museum and admire his many creations with colors reminiscent of the Majorelle garden.

An extraordinary cultural site

In the Majorelle garden, where the painter’s studio was previously located, you will now find a Berber museum. This museum will teach you more about the culture of the Moroccan Berbers, their clothing, and their traditional accessories. Find in this museum the personal collection of Berber art of Pierre Berger and Yves Saint Laurent.

So what are you waiting for to visit this extraordinary garden?

The post Garden Inspiration: The Majorelle Garden appeared first on Seezon UK.

The National Botanical Garden of Kirstenbosch: A must-see

Seezon

Inspiration

Travel diary

Garden

inspiration

Travel Diary

Biodiversity

Kirstenbosch

South Africa

Botanical Gardens

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Located in South Africa, in Cape Town, this is a key place to visit! Founded in 1913, it is one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world!

A unique collection

The botanical garden of Kirstenbosh has developed over the years but was initially designed by the brilliant English botanist H. Pearson. His goal for this garden was to create the first botanical garden in the world that would house all of South Africa’s flora in one place. This place gathers, protects, exhibits and preserves 7,000 different species.

This garden is possible thanks to its key location. Mountains surround the garden which allows the vegetation to be protected from the wind and create an ideal climate. The garden covers 36 hectares and is surrounded by a wild landscape of 500 hectares. This wilderness park is equipped with many hiking trails that allow you to walk around and enjoy this relaxing experience.

As you walk through the park, you will encounter waterfalls, stone paths, dirt roads and you will not be able to resist listening to the bird chirping that adds a magical dimension to this garden.

A spectacular variety

The Kirstenbosh Botanical Garden is divided into several thematically organized garden areas. These areas will help you understand the diversity of plants, their uses, and will ease your visit. You will find a medicinal garden with many plants used for different medicinal treatments, the Gondwana garden where you can admire trees and plants dating back more than 200 million years, or a garden of annuals, sculptures, Proteaceae or local flora.

One of the most popular areas is the Fragrance Garden. In this garden you will find the most aromatic flowers with exceptional scents that will allow you to enjoy the garden in a unique way. There is also a braille path that allows visually impaired people to enjoy the beauty of these gardens.

In short, by visiting this garden you are sure to be dazzled by an exceptional diversity!

The post The National Botanical Garden of Kirstenbosch: A must-see appeared first on Seezon UK.

Garden Inspiration: Butchart Gardens, from desolate wasteland to gorgeous gardens

Seezon

Inspiration

Travel diary

Travel Diary

Butchart Gardens

Canada

Garden

inspiration

Butchart Gardens The Butchart Garden is an exceptional garden located near Victoria on Vancouver Island, Canada. It attracts over a million visitors each year. These visitors come to enjoy the beautiful colours of these diverse flowers and trees and to learn about the history of these gorgeous landscapes.

A woman with a passion: Jennie Butchart

We owe this amazing garden to a woman: Jennie Butchart. In 1904, Jennie and her husband Robert moved to Vancouver Island, near Victoria to build a cement plant. Robert bought this property, built a home on it and started working on the quarry. As the quarry became empty, the view out of Jennie’s home wasn’t very appealing so she decided to turn it into something nicer. That is when she thought of making a garden (which is now known as the sunken garden). Little by little, and with the help of horses and carts, Jennie was able to create a magnificent garden that kept expending with the creation of the Japanese garden, Italian garden and rose garden.

People quickly realised what Jennie had created and it became a renowned attraction for locals and visitors from around the world.

With time and the help of her descendance, this extraordinary garden became a popular attraction around the world and is recognised as a National Historic Site of Canada with almost 1,000 types of plants.

A Breathtaking Garden

Walking through this impressive garden, you will be amazed by the colours, variety of floral exhibitions, water features and tall trees.

The Garden is separated into themes such as the Italian garden, rose garden, the Mediterranean garden, Japanese garden, and the sunken garden that started it all. Thanks to these unique dimensions inspired from around the globe, you are guaranteed a world tour!

Fun activities for everyone all year long

Thanks to its diversity of flowers and tree, the Butchart Gardens is a place to visit regardless of the season. In spring, experience the sight of blooming flowers and floral scents. In summer, have a look at the colorful garden and listen to live music. In fall enjoy the sound of crackling leaves as you walk through the red maple trees. In winter, the Christmas light displays create a magical feeling.

The Butchart garden isn’t just about the beautiful flowers, you can also take advantage of all the entertainment on site. With coffee shops, restaurants, souvenir shops, carousels, concerts and more, there is something for everyone!

The post Garden Inspiration: Butchart Gardens, from desolate wasteland to gorgeous gardens appeared first on Seezon UK.

Garden Inspiration: Las Pozas Garden

Seezon

Inspiration

Travel diary

Travel Diary

Garden

inspiration

Travel

mexico

Las Pozas

Jungle

Las Pozas Garden, be amazed in the middle of the Mexican jungle Buried in the heart of the Mexican jungle in the state of Potosi, you will find Las Pozas, an incredible 32-hectare garden that combines surrealist stone sculptures, cliffs, natural pools and other wonders. Created between 1962 and 1984 by the Englishman Edward James, passionate about surrealist art, this unique place will allow you to escape into nature like you have never done before.

A garden with surrealist structures

Edward James, millionaire poet and eccentric collector of surrealist art was for a long time an admirer of artists such as Dali or Magritte. On a trip to Mexico, he discovered the tropical forest of the Mexican mountains and decided to incorporate a surrealist dimension into it… A successful challenge!

With the help of 150 people ranging from gardeners, carpenters and bricklayers, he created a unique place that incorporates sculptures in the Gothic and Egyptian style into the vegetation, blending into the dynamics of the jungle. The result is astonishing: gigantic palm trees made of stone, imitation bamboo columns that do not support any ceiling, tortuous staircases going up to 4 floors leading nowhere, suspended ramps, walkways… Beyond these concrete sculptures, this unusual place also features waterfalls and natural pools, which inspired the name of this sumptuous place: “Las Pozas” (natural pool in Spanish).

One might wonder where he got the idea for cement. Beyond his love for surrealism, he had begun by focusing on ornamental plants, but his work was destroyed in 1962 by a natural disaster. So, he decided to turn to a more permanent art form.

Las Pozas is still open to the public and has been purchased by a foundation that helps preserve it. In 2009, it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, which is helping with its renovation.

An exceptional maze

While walking in this garden, you will be amazed by the numerous structures with unpredictable paths and risk getting lost in the middle of the multiple stairs, ramps, bridges, footbridges… Indeed, the lack of signage in this jungle helps to create a real impression of labyrinth that allows to really escape in this jungle between nature and cement.

Most of these sculptures and concrete works have no use. For example, you will find stairs that stop in mid-air, similar to an invitation to explore the horizon or pillars that do not support any platform.

One may ask, is this really a garden or simply nature embellished by structures?

The post Garden Inspiration: Las Pozas Garden appeared first on Seezon UK.

Why visit the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro?

Seezon

Inspiration

Travel diary

Rio de Janeiro

Flora

Botanical

Travel

Diary

inspiration

Gardens

Here are 5 reasons to visit the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro If you want to know more about the wonders of the Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro, this article is for you!
