After months of low light, chilly draughts and dry indoor heating, it’s no surprise if your houseplants are looking a little weary. If you’re wondering how to revive houseplants after winter, the shift into spring is the perfect time to act.

With a little extra care and a few simple seasonal tweaks, you can revive tired plants, encourage fresh growth and set them up to flourish throughout the year.

Assess and tidy your collection

The first step is to look at your houseplants and their conditions. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves and trim back any unruly stems. Dead or dying foliage not only affects the plant’s appearance, but it can be draining on its energy levels. Trimming it off allows the plant to focus its strength on new, healthy growth. Make sure to check the soil too – if it’s compacted or roots are starting to peek out of the pot, it may be time to repot or top up with fresh compost. This refresh gives your plants the space and nutrients they need to start growing again.

Water thoughtfully

Many plants drink less in winter, but as temperatures start to rise and daylight increases, their water needs change. Remember to always check the soil before watering and only water when the top inch feels dry. Using room temperature water helps avoid shocking roots that may still be recovering from cooler winter conditions. It’s important to make sure pots have proper drainage as soggy soil can quickly lead to root rot.

Refresh and clean

Over winter, dust can quickly build up on houseplant leaves, reducing the amount of light they receive and slowing growth. A quick wipe with a damp cloth can help remove surface dust and give foliage a gentle clean that can make a noticeable difference to both the plant’s appearance and health. Baby Bio® Leaf Shine is an easy way to refresh smooth, waxy leaves, breaking down dust and helping greenery to absorb more light. By keeping leaf pores clean, it supports healthy growth and gives plants a natural-looking shine as they recover from the colder months.

Feed to support healthy new growth

As your plants emerge from their winter slowdown, gentle feeding helps to revitalise them. Baby Bio® Houseplant Food is ideal for this stage, providing a balanced blend of nutrients to strengthen roots, encourage fresh shoots and maintain vibrant leaves. Feed little and often during periods of active growth, rather than giving a single heavy dose. This approach ensures your plants absorb nutrients steadily and avoids shocking them after a dormant winter period. For extra support, a light spritz of Baby Bio® Houseplant Feed & Mist hydrates the foliage and provides a gentle nutrient boost, helping tired leaves regain strength and resilience.

Find their perfect spot

Light and temperature are crucial for healthy recovery. Tropical plants such as monsteras, peace lilies and orchids, thrive in bright, indirect light, while succulents prefer direct sunlight for at least part of the day. Positioning your plants closer to a window or warmer area can reinvigorate growth. Rotating pots regularly also encourages development and prevents plants leaning toward the light source. The goal is to replicate their natural environment as closely as possible – this simple adjustment can dramatically improve both health and appearance.

With the right care, a little patience and the help of Baby Bio® products, winter-weary houseplants can bounce back beautifully this Spring, and you can enjoy a home filled with strong, healthy greenery ready to flourish all year long.

Not all plant pests are insects: among the organisms that attack your garden and crops, we also find some species of mites, arthropods classified among arachnids. The best known is the red spider mite, which we often encounter in the summer garden.

The threat carried by these tiny invertebrates is that they are difficult to detect. As they are so small, it is difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye.

Below find out how to recognise mite attacks and what are the biological techniques to prevent and fight them.

What are mites?

In the large family of mites, we find various arthropods, among the best known are ticks and dust mites, which are particularly feared because of the allergies they can cause.

When dealing with agriculture, we talk about plant mites which feed on plants and damage them. However, there are some mites that can help us in the biological defence of crops. They are useful organisms that can be used against aphids, haliotids and other unwelcome insects.

Phytophagous mites feed on plant sap, which they suck by stinging with their bite. The most common is the red spider mite, which affects almost all fruit and vegetable plants.

These small arthropods can reproduce quickly, particularly in times when the weather is mild, so they can proliferate while weakening the plant.

The damage they bring is not limited to sap sucking, they can carry diseases, with really serious consequences for the affected plants.

How to recognise mites?

Being very small, mites are difficult to detect, but we can notice the symptoms of their attacks on leaves. Affected leaves usually show yellowing or discolouration; they may also curl or crumple in reaction to the stings they suffer. Only with great care or a magnifying glass can we distinguish the presence of these organisms that are only a few millimetres in size.

Some mites such as the red spider mite create tiny webs, which can be seen on the underside of the leaf.

How to prevent mites?

Plant mites occur in hot, dry weather; in fact, they are a typical summer garden pest. One form of prevention can be to water often, even sprinkling moisture on the leaves. Let’s be careful, however, because moisture on leaves is not always a good idea, as it can promote fungal diseases.

How to get rid of mites?

If we find mite attacks, it is important to intervene as soon as possible, preventing these organisms from proliferating and their action weakening the crops considerably. When the attack is localised, you can choose to remove the affected leaves.

In organic agriculture, there are different insecticides capable of eliminating the mites: sulphur can be used (paying attention to the possible phytotoxicity), or oily products (soft soap of potassium, white oil, soybean oil).

Whether it’s the familiar high-pitched buzz or the sting of an unexpected bite, mosquitoes are hard to ignore. These insects have long been a part of daily life in many parts of the world, and changing climates mean they’re becoming an increasing concern closer to home too. From where they thrive, to what draws them in, and the effects they can have on our health and lifestyles, there’s more to mosquitoes than first meets the eye. This article takes a closer look at the facts behind these small but significant creatures.

Meet the Mosquito

A mosquito may be a small, flying insect but it has a huge, global presence – with over 3,600 different species discovered.

As we see warmer climates in the UK, mosquito infestations are expected to be on the rise, and with this come human health risks, as they are renowned for biting and feeding on blood.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Where They Thrive

Warmer, more humid weather during the longer, summer days provide the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to thrive. The optimal temperature for activity is generally in the 21° C range.

Mosquitoes can also be found near areas of standing water, such as ponds, lakes and even water butts.

What Attracts Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are attracted to a variety of things, including carbon dioxide emissions from breathing, body heat & odour, sweat and blood type O – making some people more appealing targets than others.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Health & Lifestyle Impact

If bitten by a mosquito, not only can it be irritating and cause itching – but it can also cause more serious health issues. Mosquitoes carry a variety of diseases, which they transfer into human blood, such as malaria, dengue and Usutu virus. With ever changing climate conditions in the UK, there are growing concerns about the potential spread of invasive mosquito species and mosquito-borne illnesses increasing.

Aside from this, mosquitoes can also affect the way which people live in the UK. Swarms of mosquitoes can deter people from participating in outdoor activities, such as gardening, camping or playing sports, which can have a negative impact on both mental & physical health.

Few things can spoil a peaceful summer evening quite like a swarm of midges. These tiny insects may be small, but their presence is enough to cause irritation, discomfort and frustration for anyone spending time outdoors. While they don’t carry diseases, their bites and sheer numbers can quickly turn enjoyable activities into unwelcome experiences. Understanding when and where midges are most active, what draws them in, and how they affect both health and lifestyle is key to managing their impact and making the most of time spent outside.

Meet the Midge

Commonly found near wetlands and rivers, midges are tiny, flying insect that can cause despair. Although they do not spread disease, they do still bite, and cause itching and discomfort. Their presence is also a nuisance, and can disrupt the enjoyment of being outdoors, whether that’s entertaining friends and family on the terrace, tending to your garden, or other leisure activities.

Where They Thrive

Midges are often found near open water areas, from larger types like lakes and rivers, to smaller types such as ponds. They also tend to be more active at either dawn or dusk, thriving in warmer conditions when the wind is calm.

What Attracts Midges

Like many biting insects, midges detect potential targets through visual cues that are a result of movement, such as changes in shapes and colour. Other attractants such as body odour, sweat & an increase of CO2 exhalation can entice midges because of this movement.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Health & Lifestyle Impact

Although they are not generally deemed dangerous, or known for transmitting disease, midges can still cause harm to humans, whether that be physical or psychological harm.

Midge bites can cause a lot of irritation, including itching, redness and swelling around the targeted area is common, and in some cases, can result in an allergic reaction. Continuous itching or scratching of the bite may lead to secondary skin infections, which can be more serious.

There is also the psychological impact that midges have on those that they surround. this includes sleep disruption, general distress and even deter from everyday activities outdoors. Not only are outdoor leisure activities affected, but for those working outdoors, midges can reduce productivity and even require protective measures which can cost.

Whether you’re hosting a garden barbecue or unwinding on the patio or balcony, nothing spoils the mood faster than mosquitoes. Rather than cutting the evening short, keep the pests at bay. Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection devices make it easy to enjoy your time outdoors in peace.

How do the Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection range work?

With the touch of a button, the device gently heats a small repellent mat using a gas cartridge. This releases an active ingredient that creates a protective zone of up to 20 square metres, helping to keep mosquitoes and midges away – including invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito.

Each mat lasts for up to four hours and can be switched on and off as needed, so no protection is wasted. A single gas cartridge and three mats together provide up to 12 hours of bite-free comfort, giving you the flexibility to enjoy the outdoors on your terms.

How to activate the Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection devices

Take one blue repellent mat from the pack and slide it under the grid on top of the device.

Remove the protective cap from the gas cartridge and screw the cartridge clockwise into the base of the device until it clicks.

Weeding is one of those tasks that pretty much every gardener would rather avoid. If you could wave a magic trowel and never have weeds be out of place, or bother your perfect garden again, then that’s exactly what most of us would do. Alas, if you care about your garden, managing weeds is simply one of those tasks you’ll have to regularly conquer.

But whether it’s a task you find daunting, or it’s just part of your gardening routine, here’s a short guide to help you deal with any type of weed.

To weed, or not to weed…

Every plant has a purpose, and weeds can actually provide a number of benefits, such as trapping and breaking down organic matter to feed insects and micro-organisms. Some even provide food for flying bugs such as the humble bee, an important part of nature’s ecosystem. They are also really good at bringing up water and nutrients from deep in the ground, the problem is; they like to keep most of it for themselves.

These plants are hardy fighters, and that’s not so good for some of your more delicate plants and crops. They grow faster than most other plants and grasses, which means they can quickly spread and take over, meaning fewer precious nutrients for that beautiful flower bed you’ve been cultivating all spring. Not to mention they can often be an eye sore.

Removing weeds from your garden, at least from those beautified areas, means giving your plants and crops the best chance they have to flourish. But does that mean you have to remove them all? Is there a small patch somewhere (behind a shed, maybe) that can be left to grow wild for the sake of garden wildlife and insects? Either way; every garden is different, and how you shape that space is ultimately for you to decide.

Common and Tougher Weeds

Weeds come in all shapes and sizes, but there are 3 main groups of weeds and understanding which you have can make all the difference in how you tackle them.

Annuals: These are some of your most common green weeds, such as chickweed and hairy bittercress. They have a one-year lifecycle before they set their seeds up for next year.

Perennials: More flowery weeds, like Dandelions have a much longer lifecycle. Getting rid of these tougher plant’s roots is essential if you want it gone for good, and using a weedkiller is recommended.

Trees: Not your traditional weed, however, a tree sprouting up somewhere it shouldn’t gets the same treatment. Even if it’s just the leftover stump that needs to go.

The tried and tested method of elbow grease, a few handy garden tools, and free time on your hands will see most of these weeds dealt with just fine. But the most time efficient and effective method, that will ensure roots are dealt with properly, is to use a good glyphosate-based weedkiller. Our sister-brand Job Done has a whole range of well-suited weedkillers that can easily tackle the above weeds and more. Why not take a look here to find the best solution for your weeding needs.

Paths & Driveways

Clearly somewhere you don’t want weeds to grow is on your garden paths and driveways. Whilst they won’t likely be affecting the health of any of your plants or crops, or get quite as out of hand as other areas of your garden, weeds pushing through paving slabs and gravel definitely isn’t nice to look at. It’s another aspect of beautifying the space around your home, and there are some simple ways to tackle it.

Weeding by hand: Whilst it’s difficult to get all of the roots this way, the simplest solution is to grab your trusty trowel and a corkscrew weeder for graveled areas and spend the time digging and scraping away those pesky weeds from your gravel and paving slabs.

Plastic sheeting: Relatively cheap and easy to cut to size; some black plastic sheeting laid out over your gravel path or driveway is a sure way to starve weeds of sunlight and water. Although, you will have to leave it down for several weeks, be wary of waterlogging, and driving over it could produce holes for weeds to find their way through.

Using Weedkiller: The most effective method is using a systemic weedkiller that will kill these hard to dig up weeds, and the roots along with them.

Vegetable Patches

After all your hard work growing some tasty garden vegetables, the last thing you need is weeds worming their way in between your crops! Whilst a little more finesse is needed to ensure you don’t snag a tasty piece of veg when weeding, you still have a couple of options other than traditional hand weeding.

Hoeing: As long as the weeds haven’t gone to seed, then regularly hoeing your vegetable patch is a great method of keeping those weeds at bay. But you do have to be careful! Make sure not to hoe through any that have seed heads, otherwise you’ll just spread them about.

Mulching: Applying a thick layer of mulch can help to smother weeds, cutting them off from sunlight. It’s best applied after taking out the biggest weeds through traditional hand weeding, and may not be as effective on hardy deep rooted weeds. Another thing to be careful about is to not let too much mulch get around the stems of plants you do want to grow, as it can soften them and make them prone to disease.

Weedkiller: For an effective, low-effort method, accurately spraying weeds that have come up between vegetables rows with weedkiller is completely safe. If you need piece of mind that you won’t get any on your vegetables, you can simply cover them with a plastic bag or sheeting before spraying.

Mossy Areas

Although a quick Google search might suggest using something like using vinegar and salt to get rid of moss, the potential for those to harm the soil and kill bacteria and nutrients in it, are far too great. Instead, our only real suggestion is to use the weedkiller designed for that purpose.

Simple techniques limit the tedious task of weeding, or even allow you not to have to weed at all. There are many alternatives to the use of old chemical weedkillers.

Non-cultivated surfaces: paths, yards and terraces

Roofs, facades, stones, gates, barriers, unpainted wooden outdoor furniture. When exposed to the north or west, these surfaces are often invaded by moss, green or red algae or lichen. There are new products that are based on 100% natural active ingredients that act by contact, the effects are visible in a few hours.

Concerning driveways, a first remark of common sense: if your driveway is used regularly and has an appropriate width, “unwanted weeds” will not grow there! If it is not, ask yourself what purpose it serves.

To keep walkways clean, you can use pine bark, wood chips, or mineral mulch spread on a suitable fabric to prevent the material from sinking into the soil and to allow for proper drainage. Another solution: why not opt for grassed paths, mowed regularly?

Don’t forget the “Japanese steps” made of flat stones that trace a path in your garden: no maintenance.

For some driveway pavements, good way to avoid having to weed them is to let the grass grow on them! This is possible with honeycomb paving that allows the grass to take root while ensuring good bearing capacity for vehicles.

Cultivated areas: vegetable garden, orchard, ornamental beds

Good soil maintenance habits

Digging or tilling brings to the surface the seeds of weeds stored in the ground and only multiplies them. By cutting the roots, you contribute to their spreading. That is why we recommend using a spade fork that will loosen the ground and allows you to easily remove the entire weed (with its root) by hand or with the help of a hook.

Covering the soil so that it is never left exposed: Mulch

Mulch act as a protective screen against light, thus preventing the growth of weeds by blocking the sun’s rays for photosynthesis. In addition to their anti-weed effect, mulch they have multiple virtues: reduction of watering, fertilising effects for the soil, protection against erosion, prevention of many diseases, repellent effect against slugs, and decorative. Different types of mulch exist from straw, wood bark, synthetic mulch, wood chipping, expanded clay, and more.

Mulch is also an effective way to avoid weeding when planting a hedge, but also in the vegetable garden, in autumn and winter, to cover the spaces without vegetables.

If you’re looking to get your patio and paving slab driveway clean and weed free, then you’ve come to the right place. In this guide we’ll go through each step to make those paths to your home looking their best!

What you’ll need to get started:

The first step is to make sure you have all of the tools and resources to tackle dirt and weeds.

Access to warm water

A bucket

A hard-bristled brush

A bottle of patio cleaning solution

If you have one available, then a pressure washer is also a great option to include. If not, not problem, as it’s not essential. And as this is a messy job, even when done right, you may want to wear some old clothes and garden gloves.

Step 1: Remove any weeds.

Weeds love finding ways to survive in the little nooks and crannies of your driveway or patio paving slabs, so before we start cleaning, we need to make sure we get rid of them. As the most effective method, we’d recommend using a systemic weedkiller that will kill these hard to dig up weeds, and the roots along with them.

Clean patio and steps in garden

Step 2: Mix your patio and driveway cleaning solution.

Using a cleaning product that isn’t designed for use on your patio, path, or driveway can actually leave residue, or even damage them. Therefore, we suggest purchasing a specifically designed patio cleaning solution that is not only safer, but also provides superior results.

You’ll need to mix this with water according to the instructions on the label, and either pour this into your bucket, or if using a pressure washer, some include a compartment for you to include cleaning mixtures.

Step 3: Pour and scrub

Now it’s time to start pouring your cleaning solution onto the areas of your patio and driveway that your looking to clean. If you have a large area to cover, it might be worth doing this in stages, so that your solution doesn’t dry on the slabs before you’re able to get to it.

Next, grab that hard-bristled brush and start scrubbing your patio or driveway. The hard bristles will easily tear through dirt and algae when coupled with the cleaning solution. You may be surprised about how much dirt is coming up or being dislodged from the slab joints, but that’s normal.

Outside patio clean and weed free

Step 4: Rinse with clean water

When you’re happy that you’ve managed to scrub away the dirt and algae, you’ll need to rinse it away with clean water. If using a pressure washer, most of this will be gone already, but you may want to change the spray to a softer option than the jet so that you can wash away the last bit. If you’re not using one, then it depends on the area you’re tackling, but a simple bucket of water or garden hose should do the trick.

Step 5: Maintenance

The best way to avoid having to clean our patio or driveway too often is by ensuring that you regularly sweep it, and keep it weed free using a long-lasting weedkiller, especially the joints in your paving.

A little regular maintenance also ensures that your patio and drive last as long as possible, allowing you to enjoy and appreciate it for years to come.

Depending on the type of driveway, you could try pulling weeds out by hand (try and grab the root of the weed)

Do you have coppery orange spots on your plant’s leaves? It is probably rust! Find out here how to identify it, treat it and prevent it from happening again.

What is rust?

Rust is one of the most common plant diseases. This fungus mostly appears in spring and fall and spreads quickly. It is important to act as soon as you notice the first signs of it so that the fungi do not further damage your plant. It is very common on roses, citrus trees but can affect many types of plants, fruits, and flowers. This disease affects the photosynthesis process of the plants, weakens it, and overall, prevents it from growing properly.

How to identify rust?

Rust is easily identifiable. It creates orange spots all over the leaves of the plant. Although spots are usually orange, they can also be red, yellow, brown, or black depending on the type of fungus. The infection usually starts on the leaves but can also be found on the stems.

How to treat rust?

Treating rust is not different from treating any other fungus.

The first step is to remove all infected leaves and stems or other infected parts (burn them to make sure they don’t infect anything else present in your garden)

After removing all the infected leaves, spray a fungicide (labelled for that matter) to help prevent from another infection.

How to prevent rust?

Using preventive methods is crucial as when dealing with fungus, preventing is easier than treating.

Rust develops in humidity so when watering your plants, avoid watering the leaves, only water the foot of the plant. It is also good to thin out foliage so that humidity isn’t trapped in the leaves.

To make sure diseases such as rust don’t spread between plants make sure to place them far enough from each other as fungi are known to be skilled at spreading from one plant to another.
