Brown tips on spider plants might be a common sight, but they’re far from inevitable. If you’re wondering why spider plant tips turn brown, a few simple adjustments to your care routine can make all the difference.

Keep watering consistent

Spider plants are fairly forgiving, but they do prefer a steady watering routine. Allowing the soil to completely dry out and then suddenly soaking it can stress the plant, often resulting in brown leaf tips.

The best approach is to check the compost regularly and water when the top couple of centimetres feel dry. Keeping the soil lightly and evenly moist helps the plant stay healthy and keeps the foliage looking fresh.

Reduce mineral build up in the soil

Tap water can contain minerals and salts that gradually build up in the compost, which spider plants can be sensitive to.

If you notice brown tips appearing regularly, try occasionally watering with rainwater or filtered water to help reduce the build-up. Flushing the soil every so often with fresh water can also help wash away excess minerals.

Feed regularly

Like all houseplants, spider plants rely on you to replenish nutrients over time. As plants grow, the compost they’re in gradually becomes depleted, which can lead to slower growth, dull foliage and browning leaf tips.

Regular feeding with a balanced fertiliser such as Baby Bio Houseplant Food helps restore those essential nutrients, supporting greener leaves, stronger roots and healthy growth. Simply add 5-10 drops to half a litre of water during the growing season and gently pour onto the soil to keep your indoor plants looking vibrant and thriving.

Maintain a comfortable environment

Spider plants are adaptable, but very dry indoor air – particularly during winter when heating is on – can sometimes cause leaf tips to dry out. Keeping them away from radiators and grouping houseplants together can help create a slightly more humid environment that many indoor plants enjoy.

Trim damaged leaf tips

If brown tips do appear, don’t worry – it won’t harm the plant. Simply trim the ends off with clean scissors, following the natural shape of the leaf so the cut blends in.

Houseplants can bring life, colour and a little calm into any home, but even the most enthusiastic plant parents sometimes struggle to keep their greenery thriving. Maybe you’ve noticed leaves drooping, stems stretching awkwardly or flowers fading faster than expected – it’s a common challenge, even for experienced indoor gardeners. The good news is that a few simple changes can make a huge difference.

Here are five of the most common houseplant mistakes and how to fix them.

1. Overwatering – Finding the right balance

It’s natural to want to keep your plants hydrated, especially when you notice drooping leaves, but overwatering is one of the most common causes of houseplant problems. Too much water can reduce oxygen levels around the roots, cause yellow leaves and leave plants more vulnerable to stress.

The key is to check the soil before watering. There’s no fancy secret to it – just stick your finger an inch deep into the compost. If it’s still moist, hold off; if it feels dry, it’s time for a drink. Use pots with drainage holes and avoid leaving plants sitting in water. Water deeply and infrequently rather than little and often and always use room temperature water – it’s kinder to the roots. With a bit of observation, you’ll soon get a feel for exactly what each plant prefers.

2. Not matching plants to light

Light is essential for healthy growth, but different plants have different needs. Tropical plants like monsteras and peace lilies flourish in bright, indirect light, while succulents benefit from at least part of the day in direct sun. Placing a plant in the wrong spot can make stems stretch or slow overall growth.

Observe how sunlight moves through your home and match each plant to its preferred light level. Rotating pots every few weeks helps plants grow evenly and prevents them leaning too far toward a window. Even small adjustments can make a big difference, helping plants look fuller, healthier and more balanced.

3. Skipping nutritional support – one of the most common houseplant mistakes

Houseplants rely entirely on you for nutrients and over time soil can become depleted. Without feeding, leaves may lose their vibrancy and growth can slow, leaving plants looking less lively than they should.

Regular feeding with Baby Bio® Houseplant Food helps replenish essential nutrients, supporting lush green leaves, stronger roots and vibrant blooms. Simply add 5-10 drops to ½ litre of water and pour gently onto the soil – it’s suitable for all houseplants from leafy favourites to delicate orchids. For plants with more specific needs, such as orchids, bonsai, citrus or succulents, specialist formulas are available to provide the right balance of nutrients for healthy growth. Feeding regularly ensures your indoor garden stays strong, vibrant and thriving throughout the year.

4. Neglecting pruning and leaf care

Dead or dusty leaves aren’t just a little untidy – they can actually affect a plant’s health. Dust blocks light, slowing photosynthesis and old or damaged leaves can take energy away from new growth.

Regularly removing yellowing or damaged leaves and trimming overgrown stems encourages fuller, healthier growth. Wiping leaves with a damp cloth helps, but for smooth, waxy foliage, Baby Bio® Leaf Shine makes the job even easier. This simple aerosol spray gives leaves a natural-looking, long-lasting shine while keeping them dust free, so more light can reach the plant. A quick spritz is all it takes to refresh your plants and keep them looking lush and vibrant.

5. Not protecting against pests

Even healthy houseplants can attract pests, from tiny fungus gnats and whiteflies to aphids and leaf miners. Left unchecked, these insects can sap energy from your plants, slow growth and cause damage to leaves and stems.

Regularly inspecting your plants is key, and there are simple, safe ways to manage pests at home. For small flying insects like fungus gnats or whiteflies, Baby Bio® Houseplant Fly Traps provide an odourless, pesticide-free solution. Just place the sticky traps in the soil to catch pests before they multiply. For more persistent insects, Baby Bio® Houseplant Bug Killer offers fast-acting protection, keeping your plants safe for up to two weeks. With a little vigilance and the right tools, you can prevent infestations and keep your indoor garden thriving year-round.

With a little regular attention and the right care, your can avoid common houseplants mistakes and help your plants not only survive but truly flourish, bringing healthy, vibrant greenery into your home all year round.

Not all plant pests are insects: among the organisms that attack your garden and crops, we also find some species of mites, arthropods classified among arachnids. The best known is the red spider mite, which we often encounter in the summer garden.

The threat carried by these tiny invertebrates is that they are difficult to detect. As they are so small, it is difficult to distinguish them with the naked eye.

Below find out how to recognise mite attacks and what are the biological techniques to prevent and fight them.

What are mites?

In the large family of mites, we find various arthropods, among the best known are ticks and dust mites, which are particularly feared because of the allergies they can cause.

When dealing with agriculture, we talk about plant mites which feed on plants and damage them. However, there are some mites that can help us in the biological defence of crops. They are useful organisms that can be used against aphids, haliotids and other unwelcome insects.

Phytophagous mites feed on plant sap, which they suck by stinging with their bite. The most common is the red spider mite, which affects almost all fruit and vegetable plants.

These small arthropods can reproduce quickly, particularly in times when the weather is mild, so they can proliferate while weakening the plant.

The damage they bring is not limited to sap sucking, they can carry diseases, with really serious consequences for the affected plants.

How to recognise mites?

Being very small, mites are difficult to detect, but we can notice the symptoms of their attacks on leaves. Affected leaves usually show yellowing or discolouration; they may also curl or crumple in reaction to the stings they suffer. Only with great care or a magnifying glass can we distinguish the presence of these organisms that are only a few millimetres in size.

Some mites such as the red spider mite create tiny webs, which can be seen on the underside of the leaf.

How to prevent mites?

Plant mites occur in hot, dry weather; in fact, they are a typical summer garden pest. One form of prevention can be to water often, even sprinkling moisture on the leaves. Let’s be careful, however, because moisture on leaves is not always a good idea, as it can promote fungal diseases.

How to get rid of mites?

If we find mite attacks, it is important to intervene as soon as possible, preventing these organisms from proliferating and their action weakening the crops considerably. When the attack is localised, you can choose to remove the affected leaves.

In organic agriculture, there are different insecticides capable of eliminating the mites: sulphur can be used (paying attention to the possible phytotoxicity), or oily products (soft soap of potassium, white oil, soybean oil).

Whether it’s the familiar high-pitched buzz or the sting of an unexpected bite, mosquitoes are hard to ignore. These insects have long been a part of daily life in many parts of the world, and changing climates mean they’re becoming an increasing concern closer to home too. From where they thrive, to what draws them in, and the effects they can have on our health and lifestyles, there’s more to mosquitoes than first meets the eye. This article takes a closer look at the facts behind these small but significant creatures.

Meet the Mosquito

A mosquito may be a small, flying insect but it has a huge, global presence – with over 3,600 different species discovered.

As we see warmer climates in the UK, mosquito infestations are expected to be on the rise, and with this come human health risks, as they are renowned for biting and feeding on blood.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Where They Thrive

Warmer, more humid weather during the longer, summer days provide the perfect conditions for mosquitoes to thrive. The optimal temperature for activity is generally in the 21° C range.

Mosquitoes can also be found near areas of standing water, such as ponds, lakes and even water butts.

What Attracts Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are attracted to a variety of things, including carbon dioxide emissions from breathing, body heat & odour, sweat and blood type O – making some people more appealing targets than others.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Health & Lifestyle Impact

If bitten by a mosquito, not only can it be irritating and cause itching – but it can also cause more serious health issues. Mosquitoes carry a variety of diseases, which they transfer into human blood, such as malaria, dengue and Usutu virus. With ever changing climate conditions in the UK, there are growing concerns about the potential spread of invasive mosquito species and mosquito-borne illnesses increasing.

Aside from this, mosquitoes can also affect the way which people live in the UK. Swarms of mosquitoes can deter people from participating in outdoor activities, such as gardening, camping or playing sports, which can have a negative impact on both mental & physical health.

Few things can spoil a peaceful summer evening quite like a swarm of midges. These tiny insects may be small, but their presence is enough to cause irritation, discomfort and frustration for anyone spending time outdoors. While they don’t carry diseases, their bites and sheer numbers can quickly turn enjoyable activities into unwelcome experiences. Understanding when and where midges are most active, what draws them in, and how they affect both health and lifestyle is key to managing their impact and making the most of time spent outside.

Meet the Midge

Commonly found near wetlands and rivers, midges are tiny, flying insect that can cause despair. Although they do not spread disease, they do still bite, and cause itching and discomfort. Their presence is also a nuisance, and can disrupt the enjoyment of being outdoors, whether that’s entertaining friends and family on the terrace, tending to your garden, or other leisure activities.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Where They Thrive

Midges are often found near open water areas, from larger types like lakes and rivers, to smaller types such as ponds. They also tend to be more active at either dawn or dusk, thriving in warmer conditions when the wind is calm.

What Attracts Midges

Like many biting insects, midges detect potential targets through visual cues that are a result of movement, such as changes in shapes and colour. Other attractants such as body odour, sweat & an increase of CO2 exhalation can entice midges because of this movement.

<smartfire-component name='spacer' attributes="{"height":50,"tabletHeight":30,"mobileHeight":30,"hasDivider":false}"></smartfire-component>

Health & Lifestyle Impact

Although they are not generally deemed dangerous, or known for transmitting disease, midges can still cause harm to humans, whether that be physical or psychological harm.

Midge bites can cause a lot of irritation, including itching, redness and swelling around the targeted area is common, and in some cases, can result in an allergic reaction. Continuous itching or scratching of the bite may lead to secondary skin infections, which can be more serious.

There is also the psychological impact that midges have on those that they surround. this includes sleep disruption, general distress and even deter from everyday activities outdoors. Not only are outdoor leisure activities affected, but for those working outdoors, midges can reduce productivity and even require protective measures which can cost.

Whether you’re hosting a garden barbecue or unwinding on the patio or balcony, nothing spoils the mood faster than mosquitoes. Rather than cutting the evening short, keep the pests at bay. Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection devices make it easy to enjoy your time outdoors in peace.

How do the Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection range work?

With the touch of a button, the device gently heats a small repellent mat using a gas cartridge. This releases an active ingredient that creates a protective zone of up to 20 square metres, helping to keep mosquitoes and midges away – including invasive species such as the Asian tiger mosquito.

Each mat lasts for up to four hours and can be switched on and off as needed, so no protection is wasted. A single gas cartridge and three mats together provide up to 12 hours of bite-free comfort, giving you the flexibility to enjoy the outdoors on your terms.

How to activate the Thermacell® Zone Mosquito & Midge Protection devices

Remove the protective cap from the gas cartridge and screw the cartridge clockwise into the base of the device until it clicks.

Do you have boxwood in your garden? Then this article is for you!

What are box tree borers?

Box-tree borers (or boxwood borers) are moths, whose caterpillars feed of boxwood leaves. Although they are small, they can cause a lot of harm to your box trees, so it is important to act quickly and with the right products!

Boxwood borers are an issue almost all year long. Generally, caterpillar larvae come out beginning of spring and eat the leaves and wood. A month later, they become moths that lay hundreds of eggs all throughout summer. These eggs hatch after a couple days and the cycle repeats itself. There can be up to 3 generations a year. In winter, caterpillars build their cocoon and wait to come back in spring.

How to recognise box tree borers?

The caterpillars have a black head and a green body with black dots. However, it can be difficult to spot them as they are usually in the centre of the boxwood and blend into the colour of the tree.

The moths are very small with white and brown wings. They usually come out at night and fly around the boxwood.

If your boxwood is infected, you will notice webs all round it. If by looking at your boxwood plant you can easily find a few webs, you can be sure that it is full of caterpillars, and it is time to act.

You might also detect boxwood borers if leaves turn brown. An effective way to detect them is also by placing a pheromone trap, that will attract and catch the moths.

How to treat box tree borers?

The first step is to cut off and prune about half the height of the shrubs. Although this cut might seem significant, it is not an issue for the boxwood as it sprouts new branches very easily. These branches must be disposed of immediately. It is also helpful to try and take a few caterpillars off by hand although it is nearly impossible to get them all.

A trick you could use it to place a tarp under the tree and shake it or spray it with water so that caterpillars and eggs fall of.

Alternatively, insecticides & pheromone-based traps are also a great way to treat and/or prevent infestation.

How to prevent box tree borers?

Although treatments methods exist, prevention is the best method in terms of cost and effectiveness.

At the start of spring, inspect your boxwoods to make sure that no caterpillars have emerged from their overwintering stage. If this is the case, use an insecticide designed for this purpose.

Place a pheromone trap next to the boxwood that will catch moths and will inform you of their presence.

Buxatrap helps eliminate this problem so that your box shrubs can flourish, through biological control using pheromones to trap these pests before they can do any damage. The trap can provide season long protection over 180sqm, with active pheromones lasting for up to 3 months, before needing to be refilled additional pheromone cartridges.<\/p>\n","brand":{"name":null,"url":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/02\/Medium-ThinkstockPhotos-493238552.jpg","alt":""},"title":"BUXatrap\u00ae","image":{"url":"https:\/\/www.seezon.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2023\/06\/zzproduct_BUXATRAP_1_FRONT_(1)-238x300.png","alt":""},"date":"2023-06-28 09:36:03","enableBuyOnline":null,"buyOnlineLink":[{"link":"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/dp\/B07CB7FVFQ\/","resellerName":"Amazon","resellerLogo":null,"customButtonText":"Buy online"}]},"buyWithAmazon":false}"></smartfire-component>
The post Detect, treat & prevent: Box Tree Borer appeared first on Seezon UK.

Are you noticing that some of your plants are getting destroyed by snails and slugs? Read this article to find out how to get rid of these pests and how to take advantage of the presence of certain types of snails.

What are slugs & snails?

Snails and slugs are both molluscs and are quite like each other. Their only main difference is that snails have shells. It’s important to understand their habits to find out how we can treat them and how we can prevent them from harming your garden.

These molluscs do not like the sun. That is why we usually notice them after rainy weather as that is when they come out of their hiding spots. They are also very sensitive to dehydration, therefore, during sunny weather, they like to hide in wet soil, in tall grass, or under pots, logs, benches, anywhere where they won’t receive sunlight.

Slugs and snails aren’t picky eaters, they will eat whatever is available to them, and most of all, whatever they can reach. They usually feed off low hanging fruits, leaves, flowers, roots…

Although you may want to get rid of snails and slugs in your garden, they aren’t always a negative. As they can’t reach high, they usually feed of what I on the soil, and help you get rid of debris, fallen leaves, therefore limiting diseases. Their faeces act like fertiliser for the soil, and their shell gives calcium when they die. Lastly, snails and slugs feed off bug eggs, which acts as a light pest control.

How to recognise slugs & snails?

Snails and slugs are usually big enough for you to see them, but there are other ways by which you can detect their presence.

As they feed on plants, they leave irregular sized holes in the leaves and leave mucus trails behind them. They also feed on elements close to the ground such as ripe tomatoes and strawberries.

How to get rid of slugs & snails?

To get rid of slugs and snails, the most common methods are traps, baits, and repellents or alternatively, by hand.

Natural methods include beer; simply place a container or cup with beer and place it where you want to attract the snails and will make it easier for you to find them and get rid of them. Or spray your plants with garlic extract, as this also acts as a great repellent against snails and slugs.

For more efficiency, you can also buy snail and slug repellent products. They exist under different substances such as barriers to spread around your plant, or bait that lures them into eating the product and stopping them from ingesting on your plants.

How to prevent slugs & snails?

If the weather is favorable to snails and slugs, then you might want to put in place preventive measures, so they don’t attack your plants.

One method is using crushed eggshells as their sharp edges will create defensive barriers snails and slugs can’t get over. Eggshells also act as a great fertiliser and add needed minerals and nutrients to the soil.

Secondly, spreading hemp mulch or any mulch that is rough to the touch. These molluscs will avoid creeping over these types of surfaces and discourage them from reaching your plant.

Pests and insects can be very detrimental to your plants, so it is important to always keep an eye out for them. A very common invasive species that can be very harmful to your plants are mealybugs. A sign of mealybug infestation is that your plant is covered with white cotton looking substance. Check out in this article how to recognise if your plant has been attacked by mealybugs, how to treat and how to prevent it from happening again and to other plants!

What are mealybugs?

Mealybugs are small insects (to bigger than 2mm) that love attacking your indoor and outdoor plants. They like moisture, warm and confined spaces which is why we find them indoors, but that doesn’t stop them from invading your outdoor plants.

Mealybugs can cause a lot of damage as they suck the sap out of your plant, which weakens it and some of them even inject toxins into the stems and leaves.

When you see signs that your plant might be infested by mealybugs it is important to act quickly as they reproduce very rapidly. Although 1 mealybug has a life cycle of 7 to 10 weeks, they can lay over 100 eggs in around 2 weeks. This rapid multiplication can cause serious harm to your plant, and if not treated in time, can kill it.

How to recognise mealybugs?

Mealybugs are very small insects (only measure 2mm), so finding the insect itself can be difficult if you don’t know what you are looking for.

The biggest sign that your plant might be infested is the presence of white, cotton-looking fuzz on your plant. This cotton-like substance is a white powdery substance made by the mealybugs.

Other signs of mealybugs that are identifiable on your plant are a loss of colouring on the leaves, weak growth, and sometimes black spots.

Tip: when looking for the presence of mealybugs, make sure to look everywhere as they love to hide under leaves, in crevices, and other places you wouldn’t usually look!

How to treat mealybugs?

There are different ways to treat mealybugs, the importance is to act quickly before too much damage is made to the plant.

If you are dealing with a light infestation, you can try washing your plants by spraying water on them (with a hose). The force of the water should get the mealybugs and eggs of the plant. However, this technique is not to be used on very fragile plants as the force of the water can damage it. When applying this technique, make sur to then wipe away any excess white residue and excess water on the leaves.

For a more efficient technique that work with all plants, you can buy products made for that purpose. Most of these pesticides are oil based and act by covering up the mealybugs and eggs and killing them.

If you are dealing with repetitive infestations, change your potting soil, as it might contain traces of mealybugs or their eggs.

How to prevent mealybugs?

Getting rid of mealybugs is tedious, so the best solution is to prevent the infestation! To do so, frequently wipe down your plant with a cloth. This will wipe any pest that may be present, but also helps get rid of the dust that settles on indoor plants and prevent them from thriving. Alternatively, use a preventative treatment product.

Before bringing any new plant inside, make sure to thoroughly inspect it to make sure it is not already infested.
