Do you have coppery orange spots on your plant’s leaves? It is probably rust! Find out here how to identify it, treat it and prevent it from happening again.

What is rust?

Rust is one of the most common plant diseases. This fungus mostly appears in spring and fall and spreads quickly. It is important to act as soon as you notice the first signs of it so that the fungi do not further damage your plant. It is very common on roses, citrus trees but can affect many types of plants, fruits, and flowers. This disease affects the photosynthesis process of the plants, weakens it, and overall, prevents it from growing properly.

How to identify rust?

Rust is easily identifiable. It creates orange spots all over the leaves of the plant. Although spots are usually orange, they can also be red, yellow, brown, or black depending on the type of fungus. The infection usually starts on the leaves but can also be found on the stems.

How to treat rust?

Treating rust is not different from treating any other fungus.

The first step is to remove all infected leaves and stems or other infected parts (burn them to make sure they don’t infect anything else present in your garden)

After removing all the infected leaves, spray a fungicide (labelled for that matter) to help prevent from another infection.

How to prevent rust?

Using preventive methods is crucial as when dealing with fungus, preventing is easier than treating.

Rust develops in humidity so when watering your plants, avoid watering the leaves, only water the foot of the plant. It is also good to thin out foliage so that humidity isn’t trapped in the leaves.

To make sure diseases such as rust don’t spread between plants make sure to place them far enough from each other as fungi are known to be skilled at spreading from one plant to another.

Wondering what the white powdery substance on your plant is? It is probably powdery mildew. Check out this article to know what it is, how to identify it, treat it and prevent it from happening again!

What is powdery mildew?

Powdery mildew is one of the most common diseases found on plants. It affects a wide range of plants (and affects the quality and quantity of flowers and fruits on your plants. Powdery mildew usually develops in hot and humid weather., which is why it usually appears around April and May (when temperatures increase) or around the beginning of Autumn (when humidity starts up again).

How to identify powdery mildew?

Powdery mildew is a white fungus that spreads around the plant and creates a powdery mat on the leaves, stems, and flowers. This fungus attacks plant cells preventing them from getting all the nutrients they need for proper growth. Because powdery mildew affects the growth of your plant, you might also notice it thanks to the leaves curling or discoloration.

How to prevent powdery mildew?

Only water the base of plant, avoid watering the leaves as that can contribute to the development of a lot of common diseases.

Place your pots in sunny spots as powdery mildew usually develops in shady places.

Choose naturally more resistant plants like cucurbits

A great pre-treatment such as Phostrogen® Organic Fungus Plant Defence, will create a natural barrier on the plant to prevent against infestation

How to treat powdery mildew & avoid further infestation?

When plants get infected best technique is control and prevention, allowing you to control the infected plant to prevent surrounding plants from getting infected.

Many fungicides treat powdery mildew and are usually a good, effective solution that is low in toxicity.

Here a few tips to prevent the fungus from spreading to other plants:

Air out the plants to avoid humidity

Spread out your pots as mildew can contaminate closely surrounding plants

Get rid of infected leaves and other infected aeras

Make sure to clean the tools you use on the infected plant before using it on a healthy one

Luscious growth and luscious greenery: that’s how you want your garden. But sometimes, a plant will weaken. Not only does location influence how flowers, shrubs and trees thrive, but plant nutrition also plays a fundamental role. A lack of nutrients shows up in the exterior appearance, through leaf discoloration or poor growth. If the right food is missing, plants may survive for a while, but they won’t thrive.

How to identify a nutrient deficiency?

Often, undernourishment is noted on the leaves. Chlorosis is known as the spreading yellowing in the middle of the green. Leaves can become only partially, but also completely yellow. If the tissue eventually turns brown, it slowly dies. These changes are called necrosis. Even the fruits can show signs: for example, if radishes are in lack of nutrients they burst.

How does a nutrient deficiency develop?

The most obvious cause: lack of fertilisation. Those who do not feed their plants at all run the risk of needing important nutrients. One-sided fertilization can also lead to deficiency symptoms. But if you think too much with supply, you may also be wrong, because some nutrients influence each other. Too much potassium, for example, can slow the uptake of magnesium. If plants get a lot of nitrogen, they also need a lot of potassium.

How can nutrient deficiencies be prevented?

First, it is important that the base is correct: if the sandy soil is very permeable, it cannot hold good tissue for long. Heavily loamy soils, on the other hand, release valuable minerals and trace elements only very hesitantly. In both cases, it helps to improve the soil. In addition, a soil test can provide information about the pH value and show how many nutrients the soil contains.

The key to healthy plants, is a balanced supply tailored to the plant. Each plant has its own requirements. If the plants grow in pots and tubs, individual wishes can be easily met. In lush perennial beds, dotted with grasses and shrubs, the different supply is a little more difficult. Here, a universal fertiliser is the solution.

In summer, heat and humidity favour the spread of diseases in the vegetable garden, the orchard, and the ornamental garden. The best way to fight diseases is to prevent them, so it is important to anticipate them by offering the best growing conditions to plants, but also to know how to diagnose them to better target treatments.

Prevention is better than cure

Diseases that are rampant in the garden in summer, such as powdery mildew, grey mould, or mildew, are caused by micro-fungi. Simple preventive actions will limit the damage, because once declared, these diseases are difficult to control.

Preventive actions:

• A suffering plant is more sensitive to diseases and parasites. Hydric stress, an unsuitable substrate, too narrow plantings, or even a deficiency or excess of nutrients can all make plants more fragile. Check the growing conditions to correct the deficient parameters.

• Plant resistant varieties such as tomatoes, peppers or melons that are not susceptible to the most common diseases.

• The micro-fungi that cause cryptogamic diseases need humidity to develop. Water at the foot of the plants and not on the foliage.

• Mulch the base of cucurbits, tomatoes, and strawberries to protect them from soil and water splashes because diseases can lie dormant in the soil.

• Use plant purines to prevent diseases and parasites. Garlic decoctions and horsetail purees are the most effective in preventing cryptogamic diseases. Nettle purine can be used to strengthen the plants.

• Cut and burn the affected parts, remembering to disinfect the blades of the pruning shears between each plant so as not to propagate the diseases.

• Never leave diseased leaves or fruits to rot on the ground.

• In the orchard, eliminate all diseased fruits and do not let the fruits mummify on the tree because they are real reservoirs of diseases.

Recognise the main diseases to better target treatments

• Powdery mildew: white felting and discrete filaments. The disease develops when the weather is humid, and temperatures rise. Very present on melons, zucchinis, cucumbers, roses, and strawberry plants.

• Mildew: brown spots on foliage and sometimes a light whitish felt on the back. The disease spreads to the flowers and fruits making the harvest impossible. Very present on tomato and potato.

• Grey mould (botrytis): a grey felting develops on the fruits, the flowers wilt, the leaves show brown spots, the stems dry up. Quite common on strawberries, small red fruits, tomatoes, roses.

• Moniliasis: lives in mummified or rotting fruit on the ground, but also in wounds. Beige spots in concentric circles of white or light brown dots develop on the fruits which soften and rot. This disease concerns the orchard.

• Rust: circular orange spots on the leaves with pustules on the reverse side. This disease is common on roses, hollyhocks, pelargonium, but also on potatoes or beans.

• Marssonina (black spot disease): black spots with a yellow halo on the foliage which eventually falls off. Very frequent pathology on roses.

Have you noticed brownish discoloured spots on your plant’s leaves? It might be downy mildew. Learn in this article how to identify it, treat it, and prevent it from happening!

What is downy mildew?

Downy Mildew is a fungus that mainly spreads to vines, tomatoes, and potatoes. Downy mildew loves humidity and warm weather, and because of its climate preferences, it is present all summer long. It spreads quickly as it develops on plants with dense foliage (that traps humidity and doesn’t let the sun come through). Although it first detectable on leaves, this fungus also spreads to the stems and fruit.

How to recognise downy mildew?

This fungus is easy to see, it translates into brownish-yellow spots on the top of the leaf that end up covering the entire leaf. Sometimes you will also notice a white layer on the other side of the leaf. The fungus doesn’t stay on the leaves, therefore there may also be brown spots on the stems.

How to treat downy mildew?

As soon as you notice that your plant is infected by this fungus, cut off the affected area immediately to avoid it from spreading to the rest of the plant.

Once you cut off the infected areas, use the preventive methods to make sure it doesn’t spread to a different area of the plant:

A homemade solution that works well is baking soda. Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 1 litre of water and spray it onto the leaves.

A great preventative pre-treatment such as Phostrogen® Organic Fungus Plant Defence, which creates a natural barrier on the plant, and protects ahead of infestation.

How to prevent downy mildew?

As this fungus spreads quickly and is quite detrimental to the plant, it is important to consider these preventive methods all year round.

As this fungus likes humidity, make sure to this out the foliage so that humidity doesn’t stay and to make sure all the leaves get enough sunlight.

Make sure you leave sufficient space between 2 plants ad fungi are known to travel easily from one plant to another.

When you are watering the plant make sure you keep the water at the foot of the plant, don’t water the leaves as that will create humidity.
